CBC / Hematology
Also known as: Retic Count, Reticulocyte Percent, Reticulocyte Index
Symptoms such as severe shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, dizziness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat should prompt you to contact your clinician or seek urgent medical care.
This test counts the young red blood cells in your blood. These young cells are called reticulocytes. Your bone marrow makes them. They grow into full red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen all over your body.
Your doctor orders this test to see if your bone marrow is making enough red blood cells. It helps find out if you have certain kinds of anemia. It also checks how well your bone marrow is working. The test can also show if your treatments are helping.
Reference ranges for reticulocyte counts can vary by laboratory and may also be influenced by factors such as age, sex, and pregnancy status. Your healthcare provider will interpret your results in the context of your overall health.
