Prolactin

Also known as: PRL, PRL Test, Prolactin Blood Test

CPT 84520Quest 1759LabCorp 322000
Critical — Seek Care

If you experience sudden severe headaches, significant vision changes, or unexpected breast milk production along with other concerning symptoms, contact your clinician or seek urgent care.

What It Measures

This test checks how much prolactin is in your blood. Prolactin is a hormone. Your pituitary gland makes it. Prolactin helps breast tissue grow when you are pregnant. It also helps your body make milk for breastfeeding.

Why It's Ordered

Doctors often order this test to check why you might have irregular periods. They also use it if you are having trouble getting pregnant. It can help if you have a low sex drive. Another reason is if you are making breast milk when you don't expect to. This test also helps find or check on a growth in your brain. This growth is not cancer. It is called a prolactinoma.

Reference Range

Prolactin levels can vary throughout the day and are influenced by factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, and time of day. Reference ranges vary by lab and depend on your age, sex, and other health factors.
