CBC / Hematology
Also known as: PLT, PLT Count, Thrombocyte count
If you have a very low platelet count (below 50,000), your risk for bleeding is higher, and even everyday activities can cause bleeding. Signs of very low platelets include easy bruising, small red/purple dots on skin, prolonged bleeding from cuts, bleeding from nose/mouth, heavy vaginal bleeding, blood in urine/stool. Signs of very high platelets include weakness, dizziness, unexpected headache, chest pain, tingling in hands/feet, pain/swelling/warmth in lower extremities, bleeding from many sites, shortness of breath, confusion, fever. Contact your clinician immediately if you experience these symptoms.
This lab test counts the tiny cells in your blood called platelets. Platelets help your blood clot. This stops you from bleeding too much.
Your doctor orders this test to see how well your blood clots. It helps them find out if you have problems with bleeding or clotting too much. The test also helps your doctor check how well some of your medicines are working.
Normal value ranges can vary slightly between different laboratories. Always discuss your specific test results with your healthcare provider.
