Stool / GI
Also known as: FOBT, Stool Occult Blood Test, Hemoccult Test
No common urgent flag from this test alone. However, if you experience severe abdominal pain, significant rectal bleeding, black tarry stools, or sudden changes in bowel habits, contact your clinician immediately or seek urgent care.
This test looks for blood in your poop that you can't see. It uses a special chemical to find very small amounts of blood.
Doctors often order this test to look for colon cancer. This is especially true if you are over 45. They also use it to find out why you have bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes when you have anemia that doctors can't explain.
Fecal occult blood test results are typically reported as positive or negative, rather than a numerical range. Interpretation depends on the specific test kit used and the clinical context; ranges and interpretation can vary by lab.
