CBC / Hematology
Also known as: ESR, SED rate sedimentation rate, Westergren sedimentation rate
No common urgent flag from this test alone
This test checks how fast your red blood cells fall to the bottom of a tube. A fast rate can mean there is swelling or irritation somewhere in your body.
Your doctor might order this test if you have signs of swelling or irritation. These signs can include headaches or a fever you can't explain. You might also have lost weight without trying. Stiff joints or pain in your neck and shoulders are other reasons.
Normal ESR levels can vary depending on your age and sex. Factors like pregnancy, menstrual cycle, obesity, alcohol consumption, and certain medicines or supplements can also affect your results. Ranges vary by lab.
