This test checks how much carbamazepine is in your blood. Carbamazepine is a medicine. It helps with seizures. It also helps with big mood changes in bipolar disorder. It can also treat some kinds of nerve pain.
Your doctor orders this test to check the amount of carbamazepine in your blood. We want to make sure you have enough medicine to help you. But we also want to make sure you don't have too much. Too much medicine could cause problems.
The therapeutic range for carbamazepine is usually about 4 to 12 mcg/mL, but ranges vary by lab and may be expressed in different units. Your healthcare provider will use the specific ranges from the lab that performs your test.
