Autoimmune / Rheumatology
Also known as: antinuclear antibody panel, fluorescent antinuclear antibody, FANA
No common urgent flag from this test alone
This test looks for special proteins in your blood. These proteins are called antinuclear antibodies. They can mistakenly attack healthy cells in your body. They especially attack the center part of your cells, called the nucleus.
Your doctor orders this test to see if you might have an autoimmune disease. This is especially true if you have symptoms like fever, a rash, feeling very tired, or joint pain.
Reference ranges for ANA tests can vary between different laboratories. Interpretation also depends on your symptoms and other clinical factors.
